New Home Window Coverings
"Choosing Window Coverings for Your New Home..."
Are you planning to build a new home? Perhaps you've already purchased an ideal partial of
land and it's time to see an architect about your floor plans.
......Now is your opportunity to really give
some thought to how you want your new home to reflect your likes and lifestyle.
Depending upon where you live and how you live, windows and window coverings can play a vital
role in your enjoyment of your new home.
An outside view is of great importance to many homeowners.
Whether you overlook bright city lights or a cool, green pine forest, your windows and window
coverings should be thoroughly discussed with your architect.
For example, if you have a rural view of mountain peaks, peaceful valleys and quaking golden
aspen trees, you'll want big picture windows or glass doors with durable but permeable coverings.
Using a decorative covering like shutters or "plantation blinds" would work well for you.
These covering should "hug" the window or door for easy opening and closing.
Depending upon what type of windows you choose, consider the many different varieties of
window treatments such as angled slats or blinds, circular blinds, or arched blinds.
If your new home has French doors, remember that most of the time, these doors will open into
the room, rather than opening outside to a deck or patio. All you need to do is keep in mind the type of valance needed; a valance that's
attached to the doors.
If you plan to put window treatments on the French doors, take into account that the door
handles will protrude 2-3 inches towards the inside of the room; your blinds or draperies must fit around the door handles.
When discussing your home blueprints with the architect or builder, be sure to discuss the exact
locations where you want the windows placed.

Small details are important; there needs to be at least two inches between the ceiling and the
top of the window if you plan to use draperies or blinds to accommodate the brackets of the window treatments.
Similarly, how far are your windows from the floor? You'll need to take this into account as
you plan how long, vertically, you want your drapes or blinds to be.
Even the placement of your furniture should be considered; you don't want a high-backed chair or
sofa blocking your window view! Centered windows are much easier on internal décor than irregularly placed windows.
Be sure to ask your builder about the hardware he/she plans to use to anchor your windows.
This includes types of toggle bolts, door mounts, even the trim strips between the windows can make an important difference in the quality and
durability of your windows and glass doors.
